A pet is a household animal kept for companionship and a person's enjoyment, as opposed to wild animals or to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic or productive reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, and/or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction. The most popular pets are dogs and cats, but there are also rodent pets, such as gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, fancy rats, and guinea pigs; avian pets, such as canaries, parakeets, and parrots; reptile pets, such as lizards and snakes; and aquatic pets, such as tropical fish and frogs. GNU Free Documentation License do you agree with these animal rights activists that calling animals "pets" is demeaning? Q. "Pet owners should stop calling their animals "pets" because it's insulting, leading academics claim. Domestic dogs, cats, and other creatures should instead be called "companion animals" while owners should be known as "human carers", they say. The call comes from the Journal of Animal Ethics, a new academic publication, edited by the Rev Professor Andrew Linzey, director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. In its first editorial, the journal also condemns the use of terms such as "critters" and "beasts", and even "wildlife" because it suggests "uncivilised". It argues that "derogatory" language about animals can affect the way that they are treated. & [cont.] Asked by - Fri Apr 29 18:09:08 2011 - Politics - 8 Answers - Comments A. These people are dangerous. I can call my dog whatever I choose. I don't mean to sound cruel, but I can't wait for the day these animal rights activists are mauled by a wild animal and their views of animals and nature take a turn. Answered by - Fri Apr 29 18:13:01 2011 my house insurance specifically excludes damage due to "impact by animals"?
Q. does that mean that if it gets blown down by a big huffy puffy wolf that I wouldn't be covered. I know its only straw but its the labour cost innit. Asked by Penfold Ickle Bear Innit - Thu Apr 8 11:40:16 2010 - Insurance - 7 Answers - 1 Comments A. The only thing I can say Penfold, is that you are damned unlucky, I have that very clause in my insurance contract. I had it specifically included just in case some mindless moron decided to fire some carcass at Smythe Hall. Well, no sooner had I signed on the dotted line and paid my first premium, than I was attacked my my chum Sniffy Blenkinsop who had built a trebuchet and was proceeding to fire dead elephants at the East Wing. Well, let me tell you that it caused some considerable damage and had to be rebuilt at no cost to me (handy that was, considering it was almost all fallen down) Sniffy was never prosecuted though, as he is not quite the full shilling since he tried to fly off the church tower by flapping his arms.
